Its interesting to try and understand the communication problems with forums and their members. The form of communication where members hide behind names and do not converse in real time communications makes communication very difficult.
Spats take place but the rules of engagement seem to be lost while moderators try and resolve the spats that take place.

Thanks for reading and the advice. It also seems to me that forums develop a culture all of their own and when someone comes along who is a bit different then the "oldies" don't like change and resist them.
I think the other important issue is that most forums the individual can be anonymous.

I agree - that's why phrases like 'lol' ('lots of laughs') were invented, so comments that could possibly be construed as 'having a go' can be instantly turned into happy sarcasm, 0r just '...having a laugh, no offence meant...'.
- there's also smileys nowadays.
I have witnessed many a pissing contest on forums. Moderators should just delete them and warn the posters to keep on topic or have their discussion 'elsewhere'.
